Helmet Head (aka Cyclists Solution #2, #3, + #4)

You may remember that I bike to work pretty much every day.  Doing this has been a challenge to my scarf wrapping ways, because a helmet does not work well with a volumizer!  Here are some solutions and advice that I have come up with so far:

1) Get to work early and do your scarf in the restroom.  Often I opt for this solution, and just arrive at work early with scarves/volumizer ready in my bag and do myself up in the restroom (which is also essential if face rinse/makeup touch-up/shirt change is needed).  This was always the most obvious option for me, especially in colder months when I need to bike with a hat/warm headband.  However, it is time consuming and can be awkward when you are biking to multiple locations and/or walking out of your workplace with friends (“excuse me while I duck into the restroom to change my scarf!”)

2) Go casual.  This option works very well, especially with a colourful cotton scarf, glasses, and earrings.  It was my go-to option in this post:

It works well… but as you all know, I couldn’t bear wearing single square scarves all the time!

3) Do the braid.  This seems like the easiest solution, and it keeps my wrap from being too boring.  Only issue is the braid sometimes getting stuck under my bag while biking, but so far so good!

4) Or do a bow!  One of the simplest options I have found is after taking down my elabourate tichel that I wear at work, I just tie the loose ends of the base scarf in a bow and ride on!  It actually looks pretty good with the helmet off as well.

To all you bikers out there, how do you bike with a tichel?  Any pointers/ideas?

Medieval Princess

A high bun and long, flowing scarves are the keys to achieving a medieval princess wrap.  This is the perfect wrap for those too-large scarves that sometimes feel a bit cumbersome to work with!

Notice how adding a black shirt changes the look completely!  (It was chilly with the AC inside.)

Bright ‘n’ Beautiful!

I try to convey to women that one should continuously strive to love covering her hair (as with all mitzvot), which means coming to understand it deeply, emotionally, philosophically, logically, and then learning how to put all that knowledge into her daily practice.  On the same note, I would never advise a quiet, subdued woman begin by wearing outlandish wraps, same as I would not advise an extroverted, bubbly woman start covering by wearing something neutral.

That being said, we are so much more than the labels that we give ourselves, and I ALWAYS encourage women to try something new and not get stuck in a hair wrapping rut.  I have often surprised myself by loving colours and styles that I had previously deemed “not me”.  Hence the story behind this beautiful wrap;  Hot pink, bright green and a huge yellow flower?  So not “me”.  But I tried it, and ended up loving it!

Here are too many pictures of this beautiful wrap.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did 🙂

How do I love my velvet headband…

… let me count the ways!

I got this super silky scarf, and my [almost] sister in law expressed her concern for how it would slip off easily!  Enter the velvet headband!  With it, I can wear the slipperiest scarves for hours and hours, and I don’t even need to check on it!

As well… check out this scarf!  It’s much less colourful than my usual, but is elegant and looks beautiful without a complicated tie or volumizer.

Casual Scarf Made Formal

This scarf is one of the first tichels that I purchased.  I love its versatility, but had never worn it in a formal setting.  I decided to try it out!  Who knew that with a little extra height and a sparkly pin, this scarf could be just as fancy as the rest of ’em!  The elastic in the scarf kept everything put for the whole night, and the pin held everything together with a little extra security.  I will definitely be trying this one again!

Once New, Now Classic

This wrap was so “new” to me a month ago… now it’s one of my most used styles!  I wore it for the whole day today and it took me from a formal occasion to heavy lifting to nannying to grocery shopping… and all the way back home!  This picture was snapped when I walked in the door, so you can see that it hasn’t budged since the morning (thank you velvet headband!)  Yes, I know it looks complicated, but the four tail braid is super easy once you get the knack of it 🙂

Extra Oomph Waterfall Twist (and updates!)

I am loving this waterfall twist wrap that I recently did a tutorial on (see the tutorial here).  It is so easy and elegant!  And it’s easy to make it even more fancy by adding a thin scarf/sash to the wrap.  Check it out!

(Please note that these photos were taken post 15 hour bus trip and pre makeup, which is why I look a little more tired than usual 😛 )

Congratulations to Eliana for winning our Judith de Paris giveaway!  This was announced on Sunday on our facebook page.  Make sure you “like” this page in order to receive these updates!  This giveaway was so successful – 115 entries describing what the entrant is grateful for right now.  I high recommend reading them if you need a lift and smile!  Sooooo… what do you think, ladies?  Should we do more Wrapunzel giveaways?

On Sunday I gave a talk and demonstration at a hair wrapping extravaganza in the Young Israel of Philadelphia.  This was my first time speaking beyond the “hows” of covering and getting into the “whys”.  The event was very well put together; I had an inspiring time, was smiling all the way home and look forward to doing many more events like this in the future!  AND, I got to meet Judith of Judith de Paris in person!

New Scarf, Easy Style

I was wearing a grey skirt and mauve shirt… what scarf could possibly match?  For some reason, I dug through my “give-away” pile of scarves, and uncovered this beauty, which matched my outfit perfectly!  I think that I had it pegged to give away because it is a little dark for my skin tone… but still!  It was almost *too* perfect in terms of matching, know what I mean?  Anyway, I tied a simple long scarf bun with it and added a small pin;  Does anyone want a tutorial on how to tie a bun with a long scarf?
