“Wrapunzel Under Wraps” part 2 – Very Short Hair

Many of you have seen our first “Under Wraps” video and infographic from last summer:

Shaper Comparison

Both became popular very quickly, as many women had been requesting clarification of the differences between shapers and what exactly goes on underneath wraps, for some time! However, for women with little-to-no hair,  these were not accurate representations of how our Essential Tools might work for them. Most Shapers give quite a different look when a bun or pony tail isn’t present underneath and until now, we didn’t have a proper visual guide to illustrate this.

Without further ado, may we present both our newest infographic and “Under Wraps” tutorial, showcasing all four Wrapunzel shapers, when worn over very short hair!

Shaper Comparison Final

Tamar Adina on “Tichel Intimidation”!

“Dear Wrapunzel,

I have a love/hate relationship with the weekly ‘challenges’ Wrapunzel runs. I absolutely LOVE looking at the amazing tichel photos, and I look forward to hearing what the new challenge of the week is going to be! But at the same time, I rarely participate. I’m not a newbie tichel wearer, but I’m not as put together as the other posters! I have a hard time creating pleats and I never get lace to look nice on me without having it “hurt” later in the day. I’m never sure if I’m wrapping my tichel right, I just kind of “put-it-on”. I have lots of scarves in my collection, but I don’t really have the time to play with new wraps, and sometimes I just throw on a hat to do my grocery shopping. I feel like everyone else goes to Target while wearing an amazing tichel. I dunno, seeing the photos makes me feel dowdy. Any advice?

The Frumpy Tichel Wearer”

Dear Wrapstar –

So, first of all, repeat after me: I am not dowdy. I don’t care if you are wearing a pair of oversized sweats with pink fuzzy socks while reading this — you still are not dowdy.

It sounds like you are feeling a little overwhelmed and even a bit insecure about your tichel wrapping ability. The goal of the “wrapunzeledin” challenges was never to make anyone feel intimidated, but I can feel your frustration.

Andrea’s product photo outtake. Yikes!

I’d like to share with you something that one of my favorite professors used to say constantly. She told us to remember that when we entered a patient’s room, even if we had worked with the patient 2 million times, we were still walking in “IN THE MIDDLE.” What does this mean? When walking into a patient’s room, we were seeing a snapshot of the person.   We were seeing one moment from that person’s life. If we were to run into him at another time while in Starbucks, we would like see a totally different snapshot. But in the hospital, the patient is in the middle of some type of crisis.

Even if in theory we know “everything going on” in the crisis (especially since we have a medical chart), the truth of the matter is that we are only able to see part of the story. We really don’t know what happened five minutes before. Did the patient just find out that he has to stay another night? Even though we might have known about that possibility, maybe the patient didn’t. Maybe in addition to the crisis lens, we also need to apply the “missing my pet cat” lens. Did the patient’s best friend just come by for a visit and she brought smoothies with her? That can change the lens as well.

Naomi Rose wearing *gasp* a pre-tied!

Why am I blathering on about being “IN THE MIDDLE”? Well, because that’s exactly what an Internet selfie is! You are logging into the conversation and entering “IN THE MIDDLE.” The beauty of the Wrapunzel Fangroup is that it connects many Wrapunzelistas and gives us a sense of community. Many of us don’t live close enough to each other to socialize in person, and the Fangroup offers that opportunity. At the same time, the picture that someone posts captures only one moment from a person’s day.

The photos in the Fangroup are just that – photos. They don’t tell the whole story. They tell only the information that the poster feels comfortable sharing! And while there is that rare breed that manages to look good all of the time, the truth is that the rest of us are usually “winging it” as we go. That gorgeous tichel someone posted might have taken three attempts to accomplish. Even if the poster wrote: “I had some frustration this morning,” since a picture is worth a thousand words, your brain will register the picture over the comment.

LOL
Looks like Rachel needs a nap!

Someone else might have cropped out their tummy/chest in order to hide the fact that they’ve recently gained or lost weight. Another person might have artfully used a necklace to quickly cover a ketchup stain that an adorable toddler blessed mommy with during lunch. Another wrapstar might be posting a photo during her thirty-minute lunch break – the first time all day that she had a second to tie a tichel or apply makeup. Had you seen her two hours prior while she was on the phone dealing with “that client” (you know, the one that makes you question your career choice), she would have looked slightly less polished. Or or or or or….the list is endless.

Also keep in mind that people tend to use their nicer photos as their profile pictures. So while you always see “Tamar Adina Campbell” commenting on Facebook from behind a profile picture that looks phenomenal, the real me might be typing while sitting on the couch and wearing a raggedy old college sweatshirt (yep, guilty as charged).

So while it might look like everyone else is “constantly put together,” very likely that is not quite the case. Some women will wear tichels for a week, and then take a break from elaborate ties while dealing with a sick spouse, or while on a business trip. With the number of women on the Fangroup nearing the thousands, you might not realize that a particular poster only puts a selfie up every few days.

But – (because I know there is a but), what about those women that post a tichel of the day everyday?! Or those women that I know in real life that always seem to look good? Well, the truth again might be that you are again only joining “IN THE MIDDLE”. You see the one selfie that looks amazing, you don’t see the 5 others that were deleted. You see the one tie that looks great, you don’t see that moment where she ran around trying to figure out where her shaper disappeared to.

Lastly, remember that we are our own worst critics. Nobody else will judge us nearly as harshly as we judge ourselves. So while you look in the mirror and see a messy back of the tichel, or a pleat that isn’t perfect, nobody else is giving you condemnation. In fact, it’s more likely that you will inspire someone to share their own wrap! So keep your chin up, and be proud of what you can do – we are all doing our best, and that means different things at different times.

Love,

Tamar Adina

Extreme One Scarf Challenge and Challenge of the Week!

20160114_153546
Hi, Justine!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: One of the things that I (Rachel) love about our weekly Wrapunzel challenges is how they encourage creativity and for women to step out of their comfort zones, all while having fun with wearing tichels (or hijabs, veils, etc)! Occasionally, we might find ourselves in circumstances where we have to be flexible with how we choose to wrap our heads. This can happen during Challenge of the Week when the color or theme chosen isn’t a personal favorite. Perhaps, our favorite scarf is in the wash or that perfect outfit we pictured beforehand just doesn’t look right with the scarves and accessories chosen. A travesty, for sure! 😉

One fangroup member, Justine, recently had a trying experience with wrapping and truly embraced her situation to its fullest! Take a moment to read about it below:

20160117_165039
The infamous vacation scarf!

“On my recent tropical holiday to visit my parents, I didn’t bring any scarves. I had just started wrapping part time for fashion, and didn’t want to waste precious suitcase space for something frivolous.

But once I was there, I found myself yearning to wrap my head. My mom had a scarf in her closet and she let me borrow it. I have had fun finding all sorts of different ways to wear it. The distinctive ombre made for interesting opportunities! I also really enjoyed posting pictures on the Wrapunzel Fangroup page and getting so much positive feedback. Thanks for the love!”

Justine was gracious enough to share her daily creations with us and you won’t believe the number of different looks she achieved with just one scarf! Check them out below:

Talk about turning lemons into lemonade! How inspiring!!!

One of the Challenge of the Week ideas we’ve been been toying with for some time is creating multiple different looks with the same scarf, just like Justine has done here! Think of it as an extreme #onescarfchallenge! edit: Feel free to accessorize away and combine your choice with other scarves. Choosing just one and creating a few looks with it throughout the week can be the ultimate exercise in flexibility and I am so excited to give it a go! Something tells me this will be a good one…

Would you like to participate in this unique challenge? Head on over to the Wrapunzel Fangroup and share your pictures using the hashtag #wrapunzeledinone. If you would also like them featured on next week’s blog post, make sure to also post them in the comments on the pinned post at the top of the Fangroup page, so we know to share them. If you’re not on Facebook, you can also email your pictures to us at wrapunzelthestore@gmail.com with the subject line “Challenge of the Week.” We can accept up to 5 headshot-style photos per person – no collages, please! Can’t wait to see what you create!!

How Do I Know if it’s “Me”?

Here’s the story behind this epic wrap:
IMG_9917

“How do I know if a wrap suits me?”

This is a question that we are forever trying to answer here at Wrapunzel, and really, it is a question with infinite depth.  Since each and every one of us has huge potential and complex personalities that change day by day, moment by moment, how is it possible to dress in a way that suits us?  How is it possible to dress in a way that truly reflects the inner beauty of our souls?

The answer, of course, is that it is impossible to do perfectly.  We live in a physical world in which it is not possible to convey the infinite beauty of our souls in ANYTHING that we do, but don’t let this deter you – let this inspire you!  While we can’t do it perfectly, we can strive to do it better and better.  And as we learn, we will be able to reveal the beauty of our souls through what we wear.  Life is a journey of learning and growth.  It’s wonderful to know that you will always be evolving and changing!  And it IS possible to learn how to dress in a way that is deeply satisfying and liberating.  We wake each day with new moods, new challenges, and new perspectives.  We want the clothing we cover ourselves with to honor who we are.

This is going to be a short story in which I tell you about my (Andrea) experience that I had with wrapping before Shabbat.

I was super inspired by Naomi’s Duchess wrap, and wanted to try it!  I also had found a sari scarf that I really liked… similar to one I gave away ages ago and missed.  I had in my mind a vision of how the Duchess wrap would work with a sari and lace… all lovely, flowy and hippy dippy.

IMG_9936
This is what I had in mind – nice eh?

I had a great outfit to match.  I have been trying this year to wear more white/cream on Shabbat and have had a lot of success doing so (when I say this year, I mean since Yom Kippur.)  A long lace skirt, lace top, and berry shell.  Simple, but so me 🙂

I tried to do the wrap… and do it, I did!  It looked AWESOME… seriously epic.  But something felt wrong – I felt like I was wearing a costume.  It was too high on my head, too “hippy” (who thought I’d ever say that?)  I just wasn’t feeling it.  My husband and I had planned an in Shabbat, just our family and no guests, so we could recharge.  This wrap was too extroverted for the internal bonding experience that I hoped to have.

IMG_9924

I asked my husband what he thought and he looked at me and said, “Well, by the look on your face, it’s obvious you don’t like it, but the Wrapunzel ladies are going to love it!”  How right he was.  It really was an awesome wrap, but I just wasn’t feeling it.  I made him come outside to snap some photos of me though.

So what’s the conclusion?  Well… I am definitely going to revisit this wrap in the future – perhaps for a wedding or some sort of event where I want to reveal my exuberant hippy side.  But as soon as Yonatan was done snapping photos, I hastily ripped it off my head and did another wrap.

Here’s what I did:

Much better!  But guess what… I STILL wasn’t feeling it!  While I would wear this most other days, I really was feeling introverted and introspective, and this wrap was still a little ‘undone’ for how I was feeling.  I needed to feel held and stabilized by my wrap.  So after snapping these photos, I decided to redo it AGAIN!

(Can you tell that we ready for Shabbat early this week?  This is not normal for us, but definitely left some room for me to think about and experiment with this train of thought.)

So here is what I ended up with!  I wanted to wear this sari scarf, but I didn’t want tails.  I decided to forgo the lace (I had enough of it in my outfit).  I wanted comforting, neat, warm, and stable.  As soon as I wrapped it I felt immediate relief, like I had found myself.

So are you going to have time to do this process every day?  No, certainly not.  And keep in mind that I was rigidly excited to try something new, even though my mood was not appropriate for the original wrap.   But as soon as I tried on that first wrap and felt that whole “this isn’t me” feeling, I knew I had to explore this idea and share the experience with you.

Sometimes it’s good if your wrap feels somewhat like a costume, especially on days when you are going to need to do things that you might not be in the mood for.  In this way, a wrap can help you do what you need to do, step into different shoes, and reveal aspects of your personality that you may not even know existed!

Other times, your wrap should feel like stepping into a warm bath – comforting, warm, and reflective.  It should feel like you have become more YOU.

All in all, wrapping should be a process of self revelation, discovery, joy, and most of all, should honor the beautiful soul that resides within you.

It’s an honor to be on this journey with you – I can’t wait to hear your thoughts an experiences!

Wishing you all much happy wrapping!
Love, Andrea

The Melissa: Sari and 2-in-1 Knot!

Wrapunzel Fangroup wrapstar Melissa has gotten so many requests for her signature Sari and 2-in-1 Knot wrap that she graciously made a tutorial!!! We love how easy this is, how fast it is to do, and how regal it looks!

Rachel couldn’t agree more!

Thank you, Melissa!! 🙂 Posted with permission, here’s her video! (Warning – may contain cute children).

Your Pleatin’ Heart

“If at first you don’t succeed, Try, try, try again.”
Thomas H. Palmer

Well, hello, ladies! It’s Sunday, which means that we’ve got another spectacular Challenge of the Week gallery to share with you all! For many, this was the most difficult challenge yet, however, each and every one of us truly made it our own and EVERYONE shined!

Despite the technical skill required, practicing the art of pleating can feel overwhelming to some. Learning which scarves work best and how exactly to place each fold takes time and persistence- an ability that rarely comes naturally. However, even if you don’t feel like a master pleater today, that doesn’t mean that you might not become one tomorrow! Experimenting and learning new techniques in can teach us so much and actively contributes to improving our skill levels over time. Try to think about it that, the next time you find yourself struggling with a new wrap or scarf!

Thank you ALL for participating in #wrapunzeledinpleats and don’t forget to scroll to the bottom of this post for the announcement of next week’s challenge!

For this week’s theme, we’ve chosen a color that’s beloved my many. One of the colors of Tu B’shvat and one that is inspired by the trees! During this time of year, many have to look long and hard to find its presence in nature… Have you guessed it yet? Check out the reveal video below to find out!

Would you like to be featured in next week’s collage? Head on over to the Wrapunzel Fangroup and share your pictures using the hashtag #wrapunzeledingreen. If you would also like them featured on next week’s blog post, make sure to also post them in the comments on the pinned post at the top of the Fangroup page, so we know to share them. Naomi Rose: “The Duchess” Wrap Tutorial!

duchess

Hi everybody! I was playing with Andrea’s latest tutorial for the Wrapunzel Veil (don’t miss it!!) and came up with this variation, which looks so regal. Wear it somewhere special – a wedding, the Renaissance festival, a birthday dinner. You’ll feel incredibly feminine – one thing I love about this wrap is how much it looks and feels like luxurious long hair.

This was my first attempt, in my bathroom (land of tichel experimentation):

FullSizeRender

And here’s an awesome contrasting version I did over Shabbat:

To do this wrap, you’ll need a few things:
A large, rectangular scarf – the bigger the better (I used Shiny-liciouses in various colors for all of these photos)
-A square scarf, triangular scarf, or sash (In the three versions pictured here, you can see a Shadowbright Sash,Silky Square, and a Dreamy Lace).
-A pretty tichel pin (I used a Sunblossom Pin)
-A safety pin or small, easily hide-able brooch (you won’t see this in the end result).
You can achieve a bunch of different effects by varying the types of scarves and pin that you use for this! Here’s how to do it:

What About my Bling Bling Bling?

BLING3

Wow, wow, WOW! If sheer volume of submissions is any indication, Wrapunzel ladies sure do like bling! We had so much fun last week experimenting with shiny accessories and blingy scarves, and have even got the photos to prove it!

If you need inspiration on how to wear tichel pins, clips or headbands, check out the incredible gallery below! Also, don’t forget to scroll to the bottom of this post to learn our theme for next week’s challenge!

Bonus: Somewhere within this collage is a chicken donning bling! Can you find the hidden fowl?

Our theme for this week is one that many Wrapunzelistas find challenging. A style that we might get more questions about than any other! Our hope for those of you who find it challenging, is that this week will inspire you to think out of the box and try something new! Check out the reveal video below:

Layered Artsy Side Swoop!

IMG_1430
#wrapunzeledinbrown

Here is a look that I’ve been having a lot of fun with lately! It’s formal, dramatic and fun, and is an excellent tie for pashminas with fancy borders (Especially the Shine On, seen here)! Adding a 2-in-1 and Shiny-licious to the mix gives a nice variety of texture and added interest. My favorite part of this style, though, is the unique “side swoop,” which can give the wearer the feeling of hair, without hanging tails!

*Please note that this style requires the use of pins and is not for the faint of heart! It is definitely more suited to more experienced wrappers and those who don’t mind the wearing the weight of multiple scarves.

You might recognize this version from our Most Popular Tichels video!

After many requests, I was finally able to film a tutorial, so without further ado, may I present to you the Layered Artsy Side Swoop!

“The Malka” Tshirt and Shimmery Together!

We’ve been inundated with requests for a tutorial on this gorgeous tichel style that Malka modeled for us!  It combines a Favorite T-Shirt tichel with a Shimmery… aka it looks fancy but can also feel more casual depending on what you pair it with and what colors you choose!

Here is the version I came up with for the tutorial!  Same thing, different colors!

So this morning I made a tutorial!  You’ll have to excuse the unstable screen (cue computer on music stand and adorable baby boy grabbing it).  Enjoy!

Naomi Rose: Bronze and Turquoise

IMG_3520

Hi everybody!

I feel like it’s been AGES since I’ve made an outfit post, so I’m overdue!
Lately I’ve been inspired by combinations of a metallic tone (gold, silver, bronze) and a jewel tone (green, turquoise, dark red, purple, etc.). It reminds me of a gem in a setting, and I’ve found that almost ANY combination of colors from these two categories looks fantastic!

Today I wore a bronze Shiny-licious, with a teal and turquoise 2in1 tied in a Liezl, one of my favorite fancy ties. When I wear three or more colors I often stay pretty match-y so I paired the tichel with similar flowy stretchy clothes (my skirt was brown, even though it looks super dark in the photo for some reason!).

Lately I do most of my Wrapunzel work from my home or my fave coffee shop, so one thing you will NOT often see is me this dressed up at 8am on a Monday! But this morning was my friend Talya’s bris for her new baby boy, and it’s a gorgeous chilly morning with nice fat snowflakes falling, so it was just the time for a special wrap.

Have you tried a jewel tone + metallic tone wrap? Give it a go, I bet you’ll love it as much as I do!

#wrapunzelcomforted (and next week’s challenge)

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth,
for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire:
it is the time for home.”
– Edith Sitwell

What do you think of when you hear the word “comfort”? Is it the process of easing grief or restoring a sense of well-being? Consoling, perhaps? Or more of the physical, like wearing your most comfortable pair of slippers, relaxing in a reclining chair or wrapping your head in your most worn scarf?

No matter what your own personal definition might entail, I think we all can agree that comfort is a feeling and with this week’s Challenge of the Week, we’ve seen more interpretations of that feeling than ever before! Turbans, tails, braids and buns… the diversity of these tichels seem to match the diversity of the women themselves, each a reflection of our own individual definitions of comft!

Check out the collage below to see some of the ways that women have wrapped their heads in comfort and be sure to scroll to the bottom of this post to learn our theme for next week’s challenge!

The title for our next Challenge of the Week is inspired by hip hop culture! For those of you who are fans, Jay Z and Jermaine Dupri coined the phrase, but in the years since, it has become well known, even outside of this music genre. Think you have it figured out? Watch the reveal video below to find out!

Rachel’s Official Welcome!

Hi everyone!  Andrea here!  You likely have noticed a gorgeous new face here in Wrapunzel land over the last few months… on our youtube channel, in our photos, on the fangroup, and also contributing blog posts!  That’s right!  Our tremendous turban teacher, Rachel, is now officially part of the Wrapunzel team!

2 (2)
The Lovely Rachel!

It was natural, really.  From the first time I met her, there was a connection between us deeper than the pretty scarves we were wearing on our heads.  It was at our Cleveland show last year!

Screen Shot 2016-01-17 at 1.37.38 PM
Meeting for the first time!

Over the year, Rachel has become more and more prominent in the Wrapunzel community, sharing gorgeous photos and essential tips, making fabulous tutorials, and always being sensitive to the needs of others.  When we started the weekly challenges, she shared a collage of her wearing #wrapunzeledinallthecolors tichels.  And when asked, she directed Wrapunzelistas by describing in detail every single product on her head, where to get it, and every tutorial needed so everyone could do the same.  It was her dedication, her instinctual giving, her integrity, her work ethic, and her attention to detail that moved me to tears, and it was then that I knew she had to join the team.

Check out those wrapping skills!

So what’s Rachel up to?  Officially, she is our “Social Media Specialist”, working on organizing our youtube channel and making it more user friendly.  She is doing the same for the blog, helping us figure out a way to make the vast content accessible.  She’s coordinating the challenge of the week posts, continuing to make tutorials, helping with emails, doing a fabulous job moderating the fangroup, restarting our pinterest and twitter, and most recently she has taken over writing our newsletters, and doing an INCREDIBLE job!  (If you aren’t signed up for these, you’re seriously missing out!)

Let’s call this our official welcome!  Welcome to the Wrapunzel Team, Rachel!
