The Wrapunzel Challenge Update!

Hello, world! Did you participate in the Wrapunzel 31 Day Challenge? It was simple, really. For the entire month of May, participants tried a new wrap style every single day, with the end result of both experimentation and fun! Most of us weren’t able to follow along with all of the different styles, but a few ladies from our glorious Fangroup not only stood up to the challenge, but documented their journeys in collage form, as well. Click on Sami, Beth and Diane’s collages below:

Amazing, right?! This challenge can be done on your own during any time of year, but we definitely intend to revisit it again in the future. Did you all have fun? We sure did!

As we jump back into our bi-weekly challenges, this next theme is one that Andrea, in particular, is absolutely THRILLED about. A classic tichel style that was one of the first she ever made a tutorial for – way back before Wrapunzel even existed!  What is it, might you ask? ……drumroll……. BRAIDS! Tichel braids! With so many ways to tie ’em, we’re sure to see a virtual avalanche of unique wraps and amazing styles. Yay!!!!

“This is what I wore today.

I’ve been extremely reclusive for the past few years, but last year it got a lot worse. A bout with severe anemia had me feeling too sick and weak to leave the house, which reinforced my agoraphobia. From late spring of 2015 to late November 2015, I did not venture further than my mailbox. From November 2015 until today, I did not go out for more than a hurried visit to the convenience store.

In addition to weakness, fatigue, and severe anxiety, my hair (always fine and wispy) thinned to the point where my scalp was clearly visible. I’ve always had a lot of identity issues with my hair. As a child I had frequent struggles with my mother over being allowed to grow it long. As a teenager, an abusive boyfriend threatened to shave my head if I dyed my hair a color he didn’t like.

In early November 2015, I decided to start wearing a headcovering. While not observant, I am Jewish, so I went in search of tichel resources. I found Wrapunzel, a blog/community online store. A friend suggested I check out their tutorial videos. Many of them seemed impossibly complex, but I kept trying, and experimenting on my own. I bought scarves from Wrapunzel, eBay, and Amazon, and friends sent me some as gifts. I took awkward selfies with my phone and posted them, here on Tumblr and then on my Instagram as well.

I started building a collection of scarves, and slowly gained skill using them. My selfies got likes and compliments, first from friends, and then from strangers as well. I even had a couple of friends tell me I looked confident!

Well, I didn’t feel very confident in general, but I was developing confidence in my tichel-tying skills! The tutorials that baffled me at first became easier to understand. I gained a little familiarity with some of the techniques, and kept trying more. For May, Wrapunzel posted a challenge to try a different style for every day.and I decided giving it a shot. Not all the styles would work on me (many of them really need a volumizer and I don’t have one, at least, not yet – not only are they a little pricy, but since my hair’s always been pretty scanty, a look with a lot of volume just wouldn’t seem like me, and identity is a big issue!), but I’ve been giving each one a try, and gaining a little skill with styles I hadn’t tried before.

I skipped ahead this morning to practice tomorrow’s style, The Gigi Knot. I’d experimented with it before, but never really been satistfied with the results. This time I tried it with one of my favorite scarves from Wrapunzel, The Duchess, and one of the lovely scarves I got as a gift from @thestarstone. I really liked how it turned out.

I mean, really liked it. I didn’t want to waste this gorgeous tichel on just sitting home with my cats.

This morning, I went out to a nearby restaurant for breakfast. I ate from a plate, sitting at a table, not from a delivery container sitting cross-legged on my bed. A polite and pleasant waitress brought me coffee, took my order, checked to see if my food was ok. As I ate, I could hear snippets of other diner’s conversations. When I paid for my meal, the waitress thanked me for coming.

Simple, everyday things, that I hadn’t experienced all year. Because I wanted to take that nice tichel out into the world, even if I had to go with it.”

Sensational Sashes & Our Brand New 31 Day Challenge!

banner4

Hi, ladies! It’s time for another Wrapunzel Challenge wrap-up post and we’re SO excited to share these amazing creations with you! We’re also pleased to be announcing a VERY special 31-day Wrapunzel Challenge, so be sure to scroll to the bottom of this post, after you’ve perused this week’s gallery. It’s one that wrappers can participate in during any month of the year!!!

Our most recent theme was wrapping with sashes and it’s been incredible to see all of these diverse looks on social media and elsewhere. Thank you all SO much for your participation!!!

What is a sash exactly?  Well, they’re what we call scarves that don’t cover your head completely. They might be too narrow or perhaps are a scarf folded lengthwise (to be worn as an accessory over another scarf). Either way, there is a seemingly endless amount of ways to wear them and if you’re looking for inspiration for how to wear your sashes as a head scarf, this post is not to be missed!

Well, if you’ve made it this far, you surely must be wondering what we have in store for our next challenge… After all, 31 days is a long time! We’ll be back in June with our regular bi-weekly challenges, but in the mean time, we’re gearing up to have a month of fun! Inspired by two members from our Facebook fangroup (Thanks Willow and Justine!!!), we’ve decided to make an EPIC challenge for the entire month of May.

It’s simple, really! To participate, each day a wrapper wears a totally different style wrap than the day before, with the challenge lending itself to experimentation and fun! Tichel newbies can enjoy the practice and learn fundamental techniques, while more experienced wrappers might discover a new favorite style or step out of their comfort zone a little. You can participate as little or as much as you’d like!

For day one (today- May 1st), we’ve decided to start with a war,-up day! Easy peasey, right? Some of these styles can be quite challenging, but remember- it’s all about having fun!

As with all of our Wrapunzel Challenges, you can share your photos on social media and use the hashtag #wrapunzel31daychallenge. We will not be compiling a collage at the end of the month, but are truly looking forward to following along and seeing what you all create!!!

Rachel: Retro Glam! (Pesach Edition)

Here at Wrapunzel, one topic we get questions about time and time again is how one goes about matching tichels to their outfits. While some choose their outfit first, others  start with a scarf and many more are “switch hitters”, so to speak, alternating between the two. Most days I definitely fall into that last category, going with the flow and waiting for inspiration to strike.

However, last week, with the first night of Pesach quickly approaching, I had an awesome minimalist dress (my husband’s choice) to start with and absolutely no clue what to pair it with. The end result was a look that I got more compliments on than almost any I’ve worn before and its simplicity is truly what made it a FABULOUS tichel. At our Seder, my family simply adored it!

IMG_0044
One Scarf Challenge – Yeah!

So, where did I start? Well, given that any color can go with black, I had a totally blank canvas- one that almost anything in my extensive tichel-wardrobe would match. This might sound like a good thing, but I felt totally intimidated and had no clue which direction to go! Alas, I had to start somewhere and my first attempt was what is almost always my fancy outfit go-to: The Shimmery. I tried a Layered Waterfall Twist using blues… then pewter and black… and then mulberry. Yet, they all felt too “loud” to go with this dress. Liking the idea of something sparkly, I moved on to my trusty green Shiny-licious, tied in a Chignon. While the green did then inspire other parts of my outfit, the scarf itself still felt like it was too much and did not match my rather subdued pre-Pesach mood.

It was then that inspiration struck and my epiphany happened: What I needed was a simple black Silky Square! Given that it’s not an oblong-shaped scarf and is therefore out of my comfort zone, I knew that my options for tying it would be limited, but this was exactly what I needed. Not to mention that its sheen matched my dress perfectly! Before putting it on my head, I added an olive drab jacket and matching suede boots (Thanks to that green Shiny-licious’ inspiration!), adding a slightly-edgy touch and bringing me closer to what ultimately became this completed look:

Now came the most important part- tying on this luxurious-feeling scarf and adding accessories! With a simple side-knot, my husband told me that I was looking like a retro movie starlet, so I knew that the finishing touches would have to match. Pearls seemed like an obvious choice (and are a personal favorite of mine), so I added my Galaxy Glimmer Pin, vintage pearl necklace and some over-the-top sparkly Art Deco-era earrings (clip-ons, no less!). In a previous lifetime, I might never have mixed gold and silver together like this, but rarely concern myself anymore with committing “fashion faux pas.”.

Well, Wrapunzelistas, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! For those celebrating Pesach, I wish you a chag kasher v’sameach! If you Wrapunzelistas are up for it, tell me, which do you choose first? Your outfit or your tichel? I’d love to hear all about the process you use in the comments section below this post!

Sara’s Tutorial: The It’s Knot Hard Wrap!

Hi, ladies! It’s Friday and that means that many of us are getting ready to don our fancy wraps for Shabbat and other weekend events. Are you looking to try out a new tichel style? One that’s intricate-looking, yet not nearly as difficult to execute as it seems? Do you have an abundance of 2 in 1s or other thin scarves lying around? Fangroup member Sara has the solution!

In celebration of our #wrapunzeledinsunshine Challenge of the Week, she used burgundy, exotic spice and saffron 2 in 1s to come up with this cheerful, sunshine-inspired triple knot, and it is one of the most creative wraps we’ve ever seen! Not only that, but it has 3 variations: tails down, hanging braid, and tucked braid; each version being more fabulous than the next!

A Trip Down Memory Lane!

banner1

Well, ladies, we just finished up another epic Challenge of the Week and it was awesome! For many of us, the way we covered at the beginning of our journey is totally different than how we do so today, and revisiting old scarves can be a great way to document this process. Our challenge this week was to wrap with our first Wrapunzel tichel or first scarf ever worn as a head covering and it was SO much fun! Some ladies even submitted photos of the first tichel they ever wore! So cool, right?  Thanks so much for your participation!!!

*Bonus: Can you find the Wrapunzelista dressed as a fairy, sitting in a meadow? She is a clue to the theme for this week’s challenge! Don’t forget to check out the reveal video at the bottom of this post!

For this week’s challenge, we’ve decided to step away from our day-to-day tichels and experiment with something truly fun!  A big thank you goes to Facebook fangroup member Meira, who ever so graciously suggested the wonderful idea! Check out the reveal video below:

An Extra Fancy Double-knot Turban!

Hi, my name is Rachel and I am a turban-a-holic. No, really, I’m 100% addicted to them and frequently find myself standing in front  of the mirror, experimenting with new scarves and different ways to tie them on. The possibilities are seemingly endless! Despite that fact, lately I had begun to feel a little bored with my usual go-to styles and had been looking for something new. Then, this past Shabbat, I finally found what I was looking for and discovered my favorite turban to date! I had tied similar turbans before, but never thought to layer them in this way. Why oh WHY did it take me so long to try it out?!

With my trusty teal Shiny-licious  and black/white/teal Ombre Sparkle 2 in 1, I got to work, layering them on, tying some knots and tucking the tails. The result was a formal looking wrap that almost looks like a french braid!

I’ve tried it another few times since and each attempt has led to the same smashing results. Any thin scarf will do- even 2 in 1’s! High volume, low volume and everything in between- this wrap has seriously got it going on! If you’re a turban addict like myself, this one is definitely worth giving a go.

Ombre Sparkle 2 in 1, New York Brights & a duo of Shiny-licious scarves!

And… the tutorial! Hope you have fun with this one, ladies!

Pashmina Perfection!

banner1

The very first scarf that I (Rachel) ever wore on my head was a pashmina. When I had finally made the decision to start covering my hair, while waiting for my first Wrapunzel order in the mail, my husband and I went out to a funky boutique and picked out my very first tichel! We were totally overwhelmed with the racks and displays of fabric before us and it was definitely an awkward experience for both of us head wrapping-newbies. Having just binge-watched tutorials, I knew a little bit about what I should be looking for, but Zahari (my husband) was totally clueless. “How about this [super slippery] silk,” he suggested. “What about this handkerchief?” “Or maybe a sarong?” (thankfully, he’s learned a lot since then!)

But just when I was ready to throw in the towel, we arrived at the shelf of pashminas. There were not many patterns to choose from and the color selection was extremely limited, yet I was immediately drawn to these luxurious scarves and knew that I would need at least one in my budding tichel collection! They felt substantial, warm, soft against my skin and because I had been growing out a freshly-shaved head, knew that the additional bulk would help conceal the fact that I had no volume underneath the scarf of my own. In the end, I had no clue which color to choose and it was Zahari that picked out a purple paisley-patterned pashmina, which marked the beginning of not only my love affair with pashminas, but with the mitzvah of head covering, as well!

Many Wrapunzelistas share my fondness of pashminas and this week’s Challenge of the Week submissions truly highlight that fact! We saw pashminas with tails and pashminas tied in turbans. Once scarf challenges,  and elaborate layered styles. What we’re left with is a collage that illustrates both the diversity of what you can do with these headscarf staples and the Wrapunzel community itself!

Looking for the reveal of this week’s theme and instructions for how to participate? Please scroll down to the bottom of this post!

 #wrapunzeledinpashminas!

For this week’s challenge, we’ve decided to start at the beginning. For some, the beginning might be yesterday and for others, the beginning might be last year! My beginning was with that pashmina my husband picked out… Let’s go way, way back, ladies!

Tichel Tantrums? Oy Vey!

Don’t let this collage fool you! Despite the relatively small amount of photos it includes, in the fangroup we had a ton of fun with our hilarious Challenge of the Week! It seems that many Wrapunzelistas don’t wish to record photographic evidence of their #wrapunzelticheltantrums, however, the stories and pics we did see were highly entertaining! I (Rachel) had a particularly interesting experience, which I would like to share with you all:

“I had a major tichel tantrum today- in public, no less! For the first time in forever, I decided to wear my Signature Shaper with an Oomphtastic Scrunchie, but because my hair is so short, the pony tail itself was very small. The end result was just large enough to keep the tails from slipping off the back of my head. I was entering a physical rehab facility (visiting a patient) and as I caught my reflection in the front door, saw that both tails had completely fallen down and were hanging by my side! I was running late, so was forced to rewrap as I wandered the halls, en route to my destination. Thankfully, I was able to do a quick regal turban without a mirror and managed to look somewhat presentable, but still…. It was totally a ‪#‎wrapunzelticheltantrum‬!”

They can happen to anyone, right?! Tantrums ranged from, “This one seemed fine at first, but then it started falling onto my forehead and hitting my right eye, so I had to rewrap in the bathroom at my office. After that, it was fine.” to ” This regal would not come out right. I spent most of breakfast getting it to just lay right. Gave up and covered it with some bling.” to “Not so much a tichel failure as a missed opportunity.”

Check out the collage below and don’t forget to scroll down to the bottom for this week’s reveal video!

Thanks, ladies!

What one woman considers a tichel tantrum might be tichel success to another and it is definitely evident in this collage. We think they all look great! Do you have tales of tichel woes worth sharing? We’d love to hear all about them in the comments below!

As for this week’s theme, we’ve decided to focus on scarves known as “the basic building blocks of any great tichel collection.” They’re some of our favorites and one of the most versatile type of scarf we can think of!

Hearing Equipment? No Problem!

One question that we get asked from time to time is how women with hearing aids and cochlear implants manage to wear head scarves. Does it affect the device’s functionality? How about volume level? Will the sound be muffled? Enter Wrapunzel fangroup member Mia, who ever so graciously made us this informative video on the ins and outs of wrapping with hearing equipment! She uses Wrapunzel head scarves and wrapping accessories to show you how it’s done and shares some incredibly useful tips and tricks, as well. Thank you, Mia!!!

Do you wrap your head with hearing equipment? What works for you? We’d LOVE to hear about it in the comments below!

Gorgeous Waterfalls!

That’s right! We don’t mean the kind that actually involve water and are fed by babbling brooks and streams, but what we are talking about is the ever-so-classic Waterfall Twist! This Challenge of the Week found us wrapping with style and grace. It was awesome seeing so many women “do the twist”!

Check out our fabulous gallery below and don’t forget to scroll down to see the theme for next week’s challenge!

The theme for this week’s challenge can be summed up in one photo:

TANTRUM

What’s going on there? Why, that would be a group tichel tantrum featuring Andrea and Naomi Rose! That’s right- our theme for this week is tichel tantrums! We want to see your tichels gone wrong! Your selfie-bloopers, accidents and more! None of us have managed to lead wrapping lifestyles free of this burden, so we thought, why not embrace the experience and share our frustrations together! This will certainly make for a hilarious compilation of photos next week!

Yael’s 1920-style Turban!

yael1

Here is the tutorial for a style that I (Rachel) am totally loving right now! You might remember Italian Wrapunzelista Yael from her Regal Wrap with a Twist tutorial, but today she is back with an all new turban style and we are so excited to share it with you! In Yael’s words, “I like it because it reminds me of the hats women wore in the ’20’s and ’30’s,” and how we couldn’t agree more!

If you’re a turban-lover, like myself, this one is definitely worth checking out!

Edit: The blue/olive pashmina seen here is a Woven Vines! Color option: Navy Cool
