Black Gets Colourful!

I must say, that as much as I love wearing lots of colour, I do enjoy my basic blacks! The ease and elegance of it is simply unmatched. That being said, I wanted to wear black today and be colourful as well! Here’s is a post about how I went about being colourful and wearing black too!

I enjoyed what I wore today very much. The colour was joyful, the silhouette was feminine yet comfortable, and the black was pulled together. Shana tova!

Gettin’ Creative!

It’s a new year (the Jewish year of 5774 just began), so what better time to start creating some new wraps! You may have noticed in the last tutorial that I am experimenting with gathering the scarves at the side of my head instead of the back; this one today is no exception. I started off doing two long twists dangling at either side of my head… but then my husband walked by, tried to hide his laugh, so I decided not to go out like that… it did look funny! (Maybe an idea for Purim?) So I undid one twist, wrapped the remainder around my head (creating a really neat knot at the side of my head) and let the other twist hang. It’s interesting how twisting at the side of your head completely changes the shape of the wrap! I am not sure that this one works so well for my face shape, but I am sure that it will work for others! As soon as I master the side gathering thing, I will make a tutorial!

Hot Day Wear!

It’s hoootttt outside! Many ladies often ask me, “aren’t you boiling in your long skirts, sleeves, and head wrap?” The answer is, “Yep, it’s hot, but I am much cooler than someone wearing short shorts and a tank top!”

How can this be?

The answer is simple: look at the Bedouins and those that lived outside in extremely hot weather. They all wore light colours, long, draped fabrics, and had their heads covered. Light fabrics reflect the sun away from your body much better than skin does! Skin fries under the sun; not only does this create health problems, but it also raises one’s body temperature like nothing else. A long, breezy skirt is much cooler than constricting shorts. Same with fluttery sleeves! As for the hair covering, I find that when I wear light fabrics on my head, I sweat much less than when I wore my hair down (sticky!) and got my scalp burned.

So here is my hot day hair wrap and outfit! The shirt is light, loose cotton. The skirt is a wrap skirt from Jerusalem, and the scarves are cotton/silk 🙂

Reaching Infinity

Yes, you read the title correctly! I finally got myself an infinity scarf, because so many of you have been asking me how to wrap one! This is the first wrap that I came up with:

Keep in mind that infinity scarves vary by size, width, and material. This particular one had two sides to it ( white lace and blue) and was not stretchy.

This beautiful, sparkly, antique brooch held the wrap together perfectly. It is quite easy to do, and doesn’t require a volumizer or any particular hair length! Who wants a tutorial?

Breezy Flowers

I hadn’t worn my favourite gold scarf for a while, so it was time to break it out! I did a high wrap around my bun and then looped the ends around, fastening them in a single knot at the side. I added an antique pin for extra security (doesn’t hurt the eyes, either!) Later on in the day, I added the turquoise sash to add extra interest.

For the outfit, I wore a dress that is often hard to match, but lo and behold, has orange, gold and a bit of turquoise in it! I wore a longer, swingy skirt underneath because I was going to be playing cello (aka long skirts are necessary!), an cream shell, gold earrings, and lace flats. All in all, it was comfortable, modest, beautiful, and feminine! This will likely be one of my new favourite outfit/tichel combos!

Elegant & Earthy (aka clothing post #1!)

You asked, and I have listened! Here is the first of hopefully many posts where clothing matching suggestions are included. Many ladies shy away from anything other than solid colours when covering; I know I used to! However, this need not be. As long as you use the scarf to pull out and enhance colours of your outfit, the scarf can actually allow you to wear MORE colour combinations than you previously would dare. I am looking forward to showing you how this is possible as I post more clothing advice.

But I digress. Here is outfit #1! Often for my outfits, I pick the scarf first (because obviously that’s what I love choosing the most), but in this instance, the shirt was one I had been wanting to wear for a while, so that was picked first. The brown skirt and layering shirt were easy choices, and the orange and gold scarf matched the shirt perfectly! Even though the scarf has silver threads in it, the gold earrings and pin were a good match. I could have easily added a green sash to the scarf wrap as well.

You may recognize the scarf as the background curtain of many of the tutorial videos. Remember?
This scarf was delegated as a curtain because I previously thought it was too thick to wrap well. Since moving, the pashmina “curtains” were taken down, and I decided to try wrapping it on my head! I don’t think this will going back to being a curtain any time soon 🙂

The scarf was wrapped in a basic pashmina regal wrap. Here is the result!

A Spiral Rose

Get ready to be wow-ed. This wrap is not for the faint hearted! After two days of moving, wearing an awful pretied, feeling totally grungy, I was just itching to do a beautiful wrap! You can get excited for a tutorial as soon as I get my video camera set up 🙂

Yeah, I know. Twists at the sides … over the top, and…

… twists at the back and then down the side!

I have to thank a VERY special for person for inspiring this wrap; she will know who she is once she sees it. (Did I do that semicolon correctly?) This wrap was done in the spirit of deep friendship and sisterhood, and represents the ties that can never be severed, regardless of distance, time, or circumstance. Thank you, beautiful lady! You are such a gift to me ❤

A Softer Black and White

I always find black and white combinations a bit stark on me… but am realizing that the contrast can be softened with pretty patterns, intricate designs, and soft textures.

Oh, and the “pin”? Clip on earring. Yep. Works incredibly!

Moving update: we are in the middle of our move currently (at a rest stop right now) and should be in Baltimore soon! Likely won’t have internet there for a bit which is why I’m making this post now. Also, a few of you asked… no, we did not live out of boxes for 2 months because we had so much stuff to pack! We actually have very little, as we were living in a studio apartment and are currently driving ourselves cross country in a teeny moving van. However, for our last two months in Chicago, we were apartment sitting, so therefore had to pack up everything for the move beforehand! Thank you all for your well wishes!

A Happy Ending

The beginning of August marked the end of the summer orchestra program that my husband and I have been directing. We finished off with a ridiculously epic concert (the kids were INCREDIBLE… like, woa!) so an equally ridiculously epic scarf tie was needed since I was to be MC-ing the concert.

This tichel was wrapped similarly to the technique shown in this video. Honestly, there were so many tails hanging around that I just tied and tucked them in randomly… and got lucky with the result!

Helmet Head (aka Cyclists Solution #2, #3, + #4)

You may remember that I bike to work pretty much every day. Doing this has been a challenge to my scarf wrapping ways, because a helmet does not work well with a volumizer! Here are some solutions and advice that I have come up with so far:

1) Get to work early and do your scarf in the restroom. Often I opt for this solution, and just arrive at work early with scarves/volumizer ready in my bag and do myself up in the restroom (which is also essential if face rinse/makeup touch-up/shirt change is needed). This was always the most obvious option for me, especially in colder months when I need to bike with a hat/warm headband. However, it is time consuming and can be awkward when you are biking to multiple locations and/or walking out of your workplace with friends (“excuse me while I duck into the restroom to change my scarf!”)

2) Go casual. This option works very well, especially with a colourful cotton scarf, glasses, and earrings. It was my go-to option in this post:

It works well… but as you all know, I couldn’t bear wearing single square scarves all the time!

3) Do the braid. This seems like the easiest solution, and it keeps my wrap from being too boring. Only issue is the braid sometimes getting stuck under my bag while biking, but so far so good!

4) Or do a bow! One of the simplest options I have found is after taking down my elabourate tichel that I wear at work, I just tie the loose ends of the base scarf in a bow and ride on! It actually looks pretty good with the helmet off as well.

To all you bikers out there, how do you bike with a tichel? Any pointers/ideas?

Wedding Wow!

What kind of head wrap should one wear to a wedding? And epic one!

This style is an elegant waterfall twist wrap with the new sash that I featured last week thrown in for extra wow power! I put my bun/volumizer much higher than usual to give it extra height. Here it is from the side:

And since many of you have been asking me to do full outfit posts as well as headwraps… this next shot is for you! I am still debating whether or not I want to post my clothing choices because this site is about hair wrapping, not modest fashion (there are many ladies on here that wrap their hair and do not dress like I do) but I know it can sometimes be hard to match wraps with outfits. Disclaimer: I am not a fashionista in the least and it is hard to take self shots of outfits! But for what it’s worth, here I am wearing a floor length silk dress ($8 thrift store sale yeah!) and a purple shell underneath:

Medieval Princess

A high bun and long, flowing scarves are the keys to achieving a medieval princess wrap. This is the perfect wrap for those too-large scarves that sometimes feel a bit cumbersome to work with!
