One Scarf, Many Ways!

Let’s start this post off with a bang, shall we?

Regular participants in our fangroup might recognize Mansikka up there and BOY did she ever take this week’s Challenge of the Week seriously! Not remembering the names of each of these styles, she came up with her own hilarious monikers and this impressive display  of tichel-wrapping skill. It’s so amazing to see this many styles all wrapped with the same scarf! Thanks for sharing them with us, Mansikka!!!

Some wrappers are comfortable taking the same scarf and wearing it multiple times in the same week, but for many others, the idea might feel extremely limiting. It can also be easy to fall into a rut and wear specific scarves in the same ways, so in this regard, we all had to flex our wrapping muscles with this challenge, for sure! A huge amount of thought and creativity went into the photos you’ll see in this week’s collage and each contributor truly does deserve a pat on the back for what she accomplished. You all totally rocked it, ladies!

 What do you think of when you hear the word “comfort”? Is it the process of easing grief or restoring a sense of well-being? Consoling, perhaps? Or more of the physical, like wearing your most comfortable pair of slippers, relaxing in a reclining chair or wrapping your head in your most worn scarf?

No matter what your own personal definition might entail, I think we all can agree that comfort is a feeling and with this week’s Challenge of the Week, we’ve seen more interpretations of that feeling than ever before! Turbans, tails, braids and buns… the diversity of these tichels seem to match the diversity of the women themselves, each a reflection of our own individual definitions of comft!

The title for our next Challenge of the Week is inspired by hip hop culture! Pretty in Pink!

Pink week in Wrapunzel-land was a challenging one for me (Rachel), but for many others, it gave them a chance to truly shine with one of their favorite colors! Today’s  gallery is full of beautiful, blushing shades and seemingly endless inspiration. Thank you ALL for your participation!

Back when I was in art school, we performed a very interesting experiment during our Color Theory class. Using huge solid-colored drop cloths, we created small “rooms” to study the psychological affects of color. In these make-shift spaces the occupants would be totally surrounded by a single color on all four walls, ceiling and floor. We would then spend a predetermined amount of time in these rooms documenting our feelings and what we observed from those around us. An interesting challenge for those beginning to academically learn about color! (scroll past the first collage for more)

 

 

When it came to the pink room, the pale hue chosen seemed to have a somewhat calming effect on both my peers and myself. The freshman group of art school students, with our high-capacity sponge-like minds, were now quite mellow and relaxed, which was quite an unusual sight for my creative group of friends and I!

It was later that I also learned of the shade known as “drunk-tank pink,” which is sometimes used in prisons as an attempt to subdue inmates. Another instance of this effect is how one sports team’s coach (who happened to be a psychology major) had the visiting team locker room painted pink  to mess with the minds of their opponents. Who knew?! I certainly didn’t and was shocked to find out that this color, which has become a sign of love and femininity, can hold a seemingly ulterior motive!

 

 

How about pink headwear? Can wrapping oneself in the color pink be a calming influence to those around us?  What have you observed about pink with yourself or loved ones? I’d love to hear about it in the comments, but before doing that, check out this week’s challenge below!

Wrapunzel’s Best of 2015!

Hi, ladies! I had such a great time taking a stroll down memory lane this week, while reviewing my favorite tichels of 2015 and hope that you did, as well! As many wrappers know, whether you’ve been wearing headscarves for a week, a month or a year+, each individual wrapper’s style and technique can evolve over time. It’s fun looking back to see  how far we’ve come!

This week’s collage is full of so much creativity and beauty!  The process that each women took while choosing their favorites, led to much introspection and I’ve included some of the fangroup member’s thoughts here. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I have!

It was a beautiful journey for me to be in this group. Though I see a several of my faces have been ‘shaped’ (oval,rounded, box) through variety of colours, scarves and shaper. But there is one remain, the smile. It reminds me the diversity of the cultures, histories and memories that have been shared among of us. But, there is one remain the same; the compassionate of each other. May the New Year 2016 grant us more compassion, strength and kindness. We are so beautiful when we love each other. I chose this one over others that were more exciting or involved more scarves because to me it represents what the essence of hair wrapping is – one beautiful scarf, elegantly wrapped, with the right ‘foundation’ underneath can make you feel like a million dollars, transform the way you feel about yourself, carry yourself and project yourself to others. I was so used to doing different things with my hair everyday that I didn’t feel like myself without it. For this week’s challenge, we’ve chosen a color that’s a tricky one for many. One with a complex history in both fashion, design and culture. A color that seemingly evolves with the times. Wrapunzeled in Lace!

Hi, it’s Rachel here and I must say that when we chose this past week’s theme for our Challenge of the Week (COTW), I was not as excited as I had been during weekly challenges of the past. While lace certainly is beautiful (and there are many women who wear it oh, so effortlessly!), I have never felt that it was really “me,” which led to nervousness about how I would be able to participate in #wrapunzeledinlace.  (keep scrolling down to continue)

As Judy so eloquently stated, these challenges were designed to help encourage us to wrap outside of our comfort zones, try something new and feed our inner creativity, all at the same time. While there is no one technique, color or texture that works for every single woman and her unique beauty (What’s simple to one, might be challenging to the next!), learning through experimentation helps refine our style and can sometimes lead to the discovery of a new favorite; one which might not have been otherwise revealed!

This week, our fangroup had many women who, like myself, enjoyed seeing others wrap with these deliciously delicate fabrics, yet were not fans of wearing lace themselves. Despite this, each participant gave it their all, which was truly a pleasure to see! Experienced lace-wearers and newbies, all sharing ideas and creativity, side-by-side. The beauty of the Wrapunzel community was so very evident to us all!

While I can’t speak for all of those who struggled with this particular challenge, what I can tell you is this: I have officially out-grown my bizarre, self-induced lace-phobia and will definitely be adding it to my wraps more frequently! However, if it weren’t for my participation in our Challenge of the Week, I would have likely remained in my own little lace-free bubble, sticking to my relatively “safe” tichels and not having the guts to try such a gorgeous, feminine fabric, to be sure! Thanks for the inspiration, ladies!

For this coming week’s Challenge of the Week, we’ve decided on a theme inspired by a specific fangroup member (Thanks, Rachel C.D.!). One that will honor growth, change, creativity and celebrate the upcoming New Year. But most of all, it will honor each woman’s beauty and individuality! Wow! Wow! Wow! Ladies, we were blown away by the seriously amazing Challenge of The Week submissions we received for #wrapunzeluplifted! Switching to a theme that wasn’t so black and white was one that we suspected might be difficult for some, but you all responded to it beautifully and we are thrilled to be able to share so many amazing photos, along with deeply personal messages from women far and wide!

I had been interested in covering and covered part time since 2011. After my second child was born I have had a terrible time managing depression and anxiety. In June 2015 I took the plunge to cover full time. Amazingly it has helped tremendously. Not only have I been able to manage better, I have been starting to feel like my old self for the first time in a long time. Wrapping has helped me toward the path of finding myself again. #wrapunzeluplifted – Catherine L.

#wrapunzeleduplifted My wrapping journey has been a lonely one. I cover in an area where for years I was the only lady who did so. I also had no support from extended family in my decision. It was heart-wrenching, difficult, and fearful at times. However, finding this group helped diminish the fear, and helped me to see myself as I truly am and to hold true to my personal convictions. And even though the same circumstances are there – (a community that does not cover and a non-supportive extended family) I am able to now see myself as a light in the world I live in. I wear my crown as a Queen and feel honored to cover. I wouldn’t be where I am in my covering journey if it wasn’t for this group! So, I am uplifted every time I come here. – Emily B.

#wrapunzeluplifted I’ve been struggling with depression my whole life. Its especially bad arounf the holidays, and worsened by the fact that tomorrow is 1 year ago that my best friend of 16 years passed away. However. When i wrapped Monday night, i was able to smile…to genuinely smile. I felt vibrant and happy, and comforted. Definitely an uplifting experience. – Yasmin D.

I want to share my #wrapunzeluplifted story. October 2014 my doctors found a brain tumor that I’ve had most my life that hadn’t been detected. I was devastated when the doctors suggested radiation to treat the tumor, I knew losing my hair was a great possibility. I’m a third generation hair dresser, I felt like a failure being in the beauty industry without hair. I also battled demons of not being able to have a baby with my husband, we tried for 5 years with intense fertility treatments with no answers. I was told because of the tumor it wouldn’t be possible, I could die or the baby would. After a few courses of radiation the sickness was tearing me apart emotionally and physically. I fell into an ever deeper depression not knowing if it would ever get better. I learned that the sickness was actually Hyper emesis. Happiest day of my life! I was so sick because I was pregnant! The radiation had shrunk the tumor to a point that my body resumed normal hormone production without me noticing! Shortly after I found out I was lucky enough to stumble upon Wrapunzel and the wonderful community and sisterhood. Everyday looking forward to seeing all the wraps, good news and encouragement really helped me get through 37 weeks of hospitalizations, medical treatments and numerous close calls. Every Time I wrapped I felt more human and it gave me strength to continue. Losing my hair was devastating at the time but it led me to find something even more beautiful and inspiring. Instead of just doing my hair and making myself look good, now I am making myself look and feel good about myself. Something I plan on continuing with myself, others and with my new daughter! Olivia was born last Friday (12/11/15) with no complications! I am so blessed to be given this opportunity. It was a hard, but with the encouragement of this group I was able to see it as the blessing it truly is! I want to thank each and everyone of you! I look forward to the pictures, stories and daily inspiration! You all are truly my #wrapunzeluplifted

I wore it on Tuesday, when at first I felt quite bad about myself. While getting dressed I first thought stuff like: “There’s no use putting on a beautiful scarf. You’re lazy and lethargic and ugly anyway, you know?” – the usual things so many of us would never say to someone else because it’s obvious that it’s neither fair nor true, but that somehow seems okay to say to oneself. But then I remembered your motto for the week and managed to tell those thoughts to be quiet and put on one of my favourite scarves: the Watercolour Dream, which has an amazingly soothing effect on me. And I added the red one because red and teal is a colour combination that rarely fails at cheering me up. And it really made me feel better that day. So thank you for that challenge of the week! It came at a perfect time for me! 🙂 – Sandra

Had a rough exhausting day Friday and then needed to vend at a holiday event. As I finished my wrap #onescarfchallenge, after a tieing tantrum, and saw the results… #wrapunzeluplifted! My mood lifted, I made the booth fee and made enough to buy the matching bracelet. Before wrapunzel (the tutorials and the amazing community) I would have felt tired and ugly and grumpy and probably would have had a correspondingly poor evening. Thank you all for helping me accept that I matter, that I am beautiful, and that being an island doesn’t have to be lonely! – Sheryl G.

Wrapunzeled in Silver! (Plus: Next week’s color revealed!)

Hi everybody! We had a great time this week #wrapunzeledinsilver! This was a challenging color, since lots of us don’t have solid silver-colored scarves, so we opened it up a bit: pewter, grey, scarves with silver detailing, or even just silver accessories. It was great to see all the creativity that went on as ladies figured out how to work silver into a wrap. Someone even did a spoof wrap using aluminum foil!!! Can you spot it in the collage?

New for this week, we’re going to roll our round-up post and next week’s color announcement into one! This week on the Wrapunzel Fangroup, we kicked off our color-of-the-week idea: each week, we’d choose a color, publicize it on the Fangroup and right here on the blog, and ladies could share their wraps featuring that color via the Fangroup or by emailing them to us.

Of course we couldn’t just pick ONE color for the first-ever color of the week, so we picked ALL of them! Here are some of our amazing wrap stars, #Wrapunzeledinallthecolors. We love the bright patterns, rainbows, layers and sari scarves that everyone used to celebrate this week of multicolored awesomeness.
